UBC Brand & Marketing

In my last year as an undergrad I had the opportunity to work with the UBC Brand and Marketing team as an events content assistant. The position helped develop my copywriting skills and pushed me to be more cohesive with the content I create.

UBC Common Energy – Megan Yakabuski

Megan Yakabuski – Team Coordinator, Food & Climate Change Committee

“As a business student we do not always get the opportunity to learn about sustainability in class. Being involved with Common Energy has allowed me to meet individuals with similar interests and work with them on certain projects “

Common Energy is UBC’s largest student-led organization focused on sustainability. Megan was drawn to the club through her passion for sustainability and the opportunities to work with others outside of the classroom on exciting projects. Being involved with Common Energy has pushed her to take an active role in building more sustainable practices in her own life and the broader UBC community.

"Jurassic Park: Fact or Fiction"

26 years after Jurassic Park captivated the masses with the potential of DNA extracted from an ancient mosquito, are we any closer to resurrecting long-extinct species?

The disciplines of paleontology and genetics have advanced significantly since the early 90’s and at the forefront of these discoveries is Dr. Beth Shapiro, a renown scientist and author. As part of the Biodiversity Lecture Series, I had the pleasure to attend her talk and learn more about the possibility to reverse extinction.

As a Kinesiology student, I came into her talk with no knowledge about paleontology or the related disciplines. I was worried that most of the talk would be inaccessible and that I would get lost in a sea of jargon. To Dr. Shapiro’s credit, I found the event to be thought-provoking and insightful into new and critical areas of research.

Apple Festival 2019

The Apple Festival is an annual festival that occurs at UBC's botanical gardens that showcases BC's apple variety to its attendees. Alongside with my peers we had to create a video accompanied by a blogpost that encompassed the uniqueness of the festival.

Hosted by UBC Botanical Garden in partnership with the Friends of the Garden, the Apple Festival returned this past weekend and brought over 30 types of apples to the public. These apples were hand-picked by farmers from across the province for the festival. A variety of apples that you can’t find at your local grocer were proudly displayed, such as the rare “heritage” apple. We also caught up with Pam Sinclair, who was returning for another year as a volunteer for the Apple Festival. We asked her what she loved most about the festival.
